Our Mercy Charism
At the heart of Gilroy Santa Maria College lies the inspiring Mercy Charism of Venerable Catherine McAuley, a legacy that continues to shape the life and mission of our community. Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, dedicated her life to the education and empowerment of young people, with a particular focus on the marginalised and vulnerable. Her commitment to compassion, justice, and service forms the foundation of the charism that guides us today.
Our story is deeply connected to this rich tradition. Santa Maria High School, one of the founding schools that eventually became Gilroy Santa Maria College, was established by the Sisters of Mercy under Catherine McAuley’s vision. Their goal was to provide young women with an education grounded in faith, integrity, and a commitment to making the world a better place.
Today, we honor and reflect this Mercy Charism in every aspect of college life:
- Compassion in Action: Inspired by Catherine McAuley’s example, we foster a culture of kindness and empathy. Through our pastoral care programs, we support students in building strong relationships, promoting mental well-being, and nurturing a genuine care for one another.
- Commitment to Social Justice: The Mercy tradition challenges us to stand in solidarity with those in need. Students actively participate in community outreach programs, social justice initiatives, and environmental stewardship, embodying the call to be agents of change in the world.
- Excellence in Education: The Sisters of Mercy believed in the transformative power of education. At Gilroy Santa Maria College, we continue this tradition by empowering students to achieve their full potential, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
- Faith in Action: Our Catholic identity is deeply influenced by the spirituality of the Sisters of Mercy. We celebrate our faith through prayer, liturgies, and a commitment to living the Gospel values in our daily lives.
The Mercy Charism of Catherine McAuley is more than a historical connection—it is a living legacy that inspires and shapes the identity of Gilroy Santa Maria College. It calls us to lead with compassion, seek justice, and serve others, creating a school community where every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to make a difference.
As we carry forward the vision of the Sisters of Mercy, we honor our heritage while embracing the future, continuing Catherine McAuley’s mission to educate and empower generations of students in the Mercy tradition.
"The simplest and most practical lesson I know is to resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow."
